Why Beware of the Doug?
For years I ran a blog on ending suffering. Now I’m running a blog on discovering the truth about the one who appeared to be doing all that suffering. It’s pretty clear that guy is the problem – well, the belief in him being separate and alone. Ergo the whole ‘beware of the doug’ thing.’ In other words, the only way this works out is if / when Doug gets dumped for good.

In the campy 1980 comedy, Caddyshack, disheveled groundskeeper Carl Spackler (played by a brilliant Bill Murray) relates a story about caddying for the Dalai Lama. As Spackler tells it, the game ends and no traditional cash gratuity is forthcoming. "Hey Lama," Spackler recalls saying to the holy man. "How about a little something, you know, for the effort.” To which the Dalai Lama replies, "Oh, there won't be any money. "But when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total[...]
A great deal of my early life was characterized by the kinds of suffering to which only a powerless child can be condemned. The details of that suffering are irrelevant for three reasons: There are as many forms of suffering as there are humans to endure it. Suffering is relative - we live in an era when everyone is trying to 'out-suffer' everyone else. It's not a competition, it's an offering. It is far too easy to transform suffering into[...]
It's not often that a scientist becomes a subject for his own research; even less common when said scientist describes his brain as 'breaking' during the experiment. But that's precisely how Dr. Nico Dosenbach, an associate professor of neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, recounted his experience under the influence of psilocybin, a hallucinogenic mushroom. "I was, like, drifting deeper into weirdness," recalled Dosenbach. "I didn't know where I was at all. Time stopped, and I[...]
Sensory deprivation via natural or manmade caves has now become, if not routine, certainly more commonplace. In recent months Outside and National Geographic have run stories on the practice, which usually involves a stay lasting days or even weeks in the pitch-black confines of a cave retreat. The goal is to eliminate the sensory stimuli that so often occupy our minds, thereby enabling the participant to gradually access deeper parts of themselves than would otherwise be possible. In the same[...]

Genuine, lasting happiness is an internal state of being. Finding it outside oneself is a fool's errand (and, unfortunately, what a majority of humans practice). This was the verdict of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, whose observations[...]

Of all the practices we recommend, this is the one that matters most. In fact, your quest for the truth about yourself may begin - and end - with this meditation. The reason: meditation[...]

Today a few words on the mysterious, spiritual guidance we receive when we most need it are actually open to it. Carl Jung labeled this phenomenon synchronicity, and though there is no scientific evidence for[...]

Using fMRI technology, scientists for the first time have revealed significant - albeit temporary - changes in the brain function of individuals using psilocybin, a hallucinogen known more casually as 'magic mushrooms.' "I've never seen[...]

A long, long time ago a wandering preacher told anyone who would listen to seek until they find. For a long time I imagined this meant seek until you reach enlightenment, though I had (and[...]

Read enough stories on the topic of spiritual awakening and you'll discover a common vein running through all of them: the eradication of the one doing the seeking. Spiritual awakening, writes David Carse, is letting[...]

The material world is not what we perceive it to be. This is the age-old message of the mystics, sages, and seers. But it's also become a central discovery of modern science. Assuming we're open-minded[...]
